Default Britain’s Oldest drivers – prog on TV this week

Bored in the hotel this week and I resorted to channel surfing on the TV. Did anyone watch Britain’s oldest drivers (think that was what it was called) on BBC1 on Wed night? The programme featured some “interesting” characters in the 90+ years young area.

One of the guys explained to the instructor that he had decided it was time to try and pass his test, he never sat his test but gained confidence on the road by being a getaway driver in his youth.

O M G, I hope I know when to hang up the keys.

Yep... the woman in her 90's who's annual mileage was just 16 miles (200yds to the hairdressers and back every couple of weeks)... they showed footage of her bumping into a parked car and just driving off, and they were interviewing her outside her car then she opened her door into the car next to her with an impressive bang and then left her walking stick on the roof and drove off.

I dealt with a motorist like this a few weeks ago, and there was nothing I could do to stop him driving..... had to put a report to DVLA and leave it with thm to try and sort out!! crazy!!!

Yeah I watched it too. Absolutely unbelievable. What about the old couple in the Roller who went to the pub for lunch - two bottles of wine on the table and only the 2 of them. Got in the car in the car park and reversed into something with a crunch and just drove off. Pulled out of the car park and swung onto the wrong side of the road in front of an oncoming van. Also the woman who drove so slowly that cyclists passed her and had a huge queue of traffic built up behind her causing frustration which is likely to result in someone having a bump. I know everyone is entitled to drive but surely there should be some kind of test for people over the age of say 75. It wouldn't need to be a strict driving test, more an appraisal of their ability to drive in a safe manner and at a reasonable speed with the flow of traffic.
Nice to see the old boy still racing the vintage motor at Silverstone though. Over 100mph at 95 years old. Would be nice to think I could manage that.

Had one of them today. Doing 10mph and there was a pigging queue of 5 of them bumper to bumper. Then the 'safe' driver just sitting behind them not trying to overtake.

Was a long straight so a quick press of the ol' Sport button, full throttle and passed them. Woke them up a bit as I went by too

I wish I'd seen that. Probably best I didn't, my blood pressure would have got too high.

VV, I think you are selling yourself short with hanging up the keys at 60.

Could you really imagine that from that time on you would be dependant on public transport?

I think you would have a few years left.

Technology being what it is in a few years you may find that the only thing the driver needs to do is put the petrol in, the car would do the rest (get in, enter the address and relax in the back seat)
