Default 2012 MOT rules: Diesel Emissions 1.6% Hydrocarbons...

I've been talking to Vectra Forever about de-catting our 2.2DTIs and he's been looking into the new MOT rules about the diesel emissions.

The old limit was 3.4% Hydrocarbons.
The new limit is 1.6% Hydrocarbons.

According to Vauxhall data our 2.2DTI's operate between 1.98% and 2.87% hydrocarbon.

So even if our engines/EGR and Cats were running at their optimum they would still fail!

This puzzled me so I rang a local garage that I used to frequent. I know the owner fairly well so was hoping he'd be able to give me an answer. Unfortunatly he was on holiday so I put it to his chief mechanic and he said that the emissions would only apply to newer cars (although he wasnt 100% sure and he didnt know what year) and if I were to MOT the car at their garage they would use the old tolerance for my 9 year old Vectra.

Is there any garage mechanics on here that confirm this? VOSA website is not clear whether it applies to new vehicles or not.

I was planning to de-cat tomorrow but just need some clarity!!

I had my car MOT'd today and the smoke test result was 1.14% and that is with no cat or middle box, and a duff EGR. For now, I'd say you were fine. The limit was coming up on the computer as 1.5% when he was doing the test.

Looks like it the new limits are post 2008 diesel cars.

For those who cant be arsed to download the PDF:

"On 01 July 2011 the diesel smoke limit for vehicles first used on or after 01 July 2008 will be reduced to a maximum of 1.5m-¹. As advised in SN 3 – 2010 all diesel smoke meters require an update to test to the new limit on this date."
