Default V6CDTi - Oil shot after just 6k miles?

I had an oil change at 215,000km and the GM LL oil was shot after 20,000km (dirt particles on dipstick) so right when I intended to do an oil change.
Now, the Castrol Edge TurboDiesel 5w40 is looking the same after only 10,000km! Surely that's not normal for an oil like Castrol? Or is my engine simply too dirty now? I suppose an engine flush is out of the question for a 150k+ mile V6CDTi, or is it?
Which oil should I use? I was really happy with Mobil 1 5w50

Should stress that the engine uses negligibly small amounts of oil between oil changes (15-20,000km).

Diesel engine oil will become very dark within a few miles from new
Inspect it daily, as per handbook

The Long Life oils are designed to hold a large amount of contaminants
Mine lasts to about 15K miles and then deteriorates rapidly, but by then it looks like treacle but is still very fluid
However, by 20K miles and the service indicator appearing it starts to appear thicker

My current oil is about 5K miles old and is already looking like black paint, but the service indicator shows it is still as expected

How does the Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40 compare to the OE oil / specification?

I have my reservations on 5w30 oil in high mileage engines, but if yours doesn't use any then it must be ok. Unless yours doesn't use any when running 5w50?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

The Edge oil is within GM spec for diesel engines. The handbook states it's fine to use 5w40 so thought I'd try it since it's a Turbo Diesel specific oil.

As for the 5w50 oil, I had absolutely no oil consumption in 10k intervals (used it for 2 oil changes), and nearly no oil vapour/fumes when the engine was hot as opposed to the GM 5w30 and this 5w40. Neither the 5w50 or 5w40 are Long Life spec oils.

You've been hammering the car since you've sorted some of its' issues... more loud pedal, more soot, dirtier oil

How does the 'oil life remaining' indicator work on these? I can opcom the life left in %. If it actually does some sort of measurement of the oils' quality, then this could be an indicator of whether the oil is shot... else it could just be based on distance travelled and number of cold starts... anyone know how 'clever' this indicator is???

Millers oils are considered the dog's danglies here. Not cheap, but they do make some cracking oils. They have got outlets in Europe. They recommend 2 sorts for the Y30 (same recommendation for the Z30, just the Z has to have it changed twice as often)

In the performance profile for the oils, Castrol does not come up as an equivalent product...??????

The 5w30 GM LL oil I had in suffered Germany three times and twice as many km's, yet remained un-sooty.

However, the engine was slightly noisier, there was a lot more oil fumes coming out of the filler cap, and my mate said the car puffed out a bit of blue smoke when I really hammered it. None of which ever happened with the thicker oil (5w50).

I don't like the 5w30 oils purely because the oil temperatures in this engine are REALLY high most of the time, and since I drive quite fast (even faster in Germany), they just get higher. The oil needs to maintain its lubricating properties and I think the 5w30 oil is simply too thin...
