Personally I would steer clear of the earlier cars i.e 09-10 as there were lost of problems. If you pop over to the "insignia Enthusiast" website they are a very informative and helpful bunch and will answer any questions.

Mines 09 and it's been great except 2nd gear clunking but regardless of year they are all seem to do it, newer versions are a bit quieter on engine front. Apart from that it will be covered by Vauxhall warranty for another year so all should be fine, Mpg is no where near what Vauxhall state I'm getting low 30's around town but 52-55 mpg on long trip

Not sure where he gets info because I'm a member if insig enthusiast and I haven't seen any major problems on the 130 or 160, there's been a few recalls but it's the same for any new model just out. Like I said the main issue is gearbox clunk in 2nd gear but some say there's are fine yet others say they all do it

Just thought I could point him to a site where he would get a more balanced view of the problems associated with the Insignia, particularly on the early models. Other than the clunky gear change, I am also aware of scoring of rear brake discs on earlier cars which I think are only covered under warranty up to 18K miles so if this has not been done on the 30K mile he is looking at this could lead to unecessary expense. I also appreciate that you mostly get to hear about the faults with cars on forums and whether it is covered under warranty and the most cost-effective way to fix, not generally how good and reliable the cars have been.

I have a 2011 Ecoflex Elite Nav which has been faultless so far, but as Bigmac states, not achieving anywhere near the manufacturers quoted mpg figures...................wouldn't change back to my old Vectra SRI DCTI 150 though despite this.
