    Default resting range???

    Hi
just a quick question, my range was showing 18 miles but the fuel light wasnt even on, about 2 miles later the light came on, i thought when the light came on you had about 50 miles. can you reset the range. i had a prefacelift a few years back and you could do that on the stalks but im not sure how/if you can with the facelift, i have fitted an aftermarket stereo now but still have it.

what range do you have when the fuel light comes on?

is there a way to recalculate it like on prefacelift?

    many thanks
    Nathan

The range is based on your current fuel left in the tank and the fuel usage over the last 30 miles of driving (that number may be incorrect, but the idea's the important thing...)

The light on the dash is based on the fuel left in the tank, and not the range calculation. When it gets to a certain level, it comes on. If you're doing short journeys, it'll come on with less range than to go than if you're cruising on the motorway.

It can't be reset because it's based on what is left in the tank. It changes automatically when you refuel...

thanks i understand the light comes on based on fuel in tank not the computer range.
my last 30 miles have all been short jorneys so that probably why.

Depends on what sort of driving I'm about to do, if I'm likely to run out or be looking for a petrol station at an inopportune moment, if I'm looking good for an economy run and could get a massive mileage from the tank, and lots of other things...

How close it is to payday is also a factor...

You can reset the range calculator so it forgets the average fuel consumption figures it's been using. The process is slightly different from resetting the other counters (eg Trip Distance):

Press the Select button on the stalk to get to the display with all the figures on. Set Range as the selected line (ie arrow next to it). Go to the Settings page., then do Reset Present.

Basically when you do Reset All, it doesn't reset the Range calculator, but it does all the others (Trip Distance, Average Speed, Average consumption etc). So you have to explicitly reset the Range one.

As said above, it's based off the fuel tank level (which can be a bit imprecise due to the fuel moving about etc) and the average fuel consumption. So with very little fuel in the tank, the level reading isn't that accurate to start with, and if you're accelerating a lot (eg stop/start driving) then the average fuel consumption will be rubbish - and so it won't show much range. Similarly with a full tank and coasting down a long hill it'll show a stupidly high range because you're using next to no fuel...

It's only a guide after all. If you've got LPG, it's way out all the time because the fuel consumption figures are based off the petrol injectors, not the LPG ones...
