Default Engine rough as a badgers ar5

Got car back from dealer yesterday. Started it up and it made small tapping noise but then sorted itself out (noticed the engine was warm before I started it as I had a look under bonnet. Well got up this morning started the car and sh!t !!! For the first 5 seconds it sounded just like a D reg ford orion diesel ! Then again sorted itself out all be it running a bit more noisey than it used to before it went in. The colder the engine is the louder and longer the noise is/lasts. By the way the car went in for an oil leak, it was traced to faulty oil scraper ring/rings so they have pretty much had to strip the engine to get the rings off. SE not YH. And yes going in to see them tommorow but would like some armourment.

Was thinking that. Do they have to be primed? The car was running sweet before thet had the thing in bits?

oil has to get to the top end but it should hold it up top so you get a quiet start up , only if its done a shed load of miles will they get tappety , if its happened since the cars been worked on take it back and demand to have it put right .

27k. Dont work im fighting tomorrow, they also thought that an addition of a large scratch on the bonnet would help the cars looks!

    Rushy,

The other 'item' that would give you a similar noise is the Chain if the hydraulic tensioner isn't doing it's job.. All the 2.2's i've come across have been silent from startup, it's normally the v6's that have a little tap for the 1st few seconds..

Deffo sounds like some kind of oil drainback or even seized hydraulic problem.. if the engine was re-built by an animal, did he even check that the lifters were free to move in their bores?? Did he compress them to remove the oil within so that in the 1st startup they would selfprime and take up their new correct adjustment?? Did they Strip and examine the oil pump to check the operation of the bypass valve after the engine has stood for so long??

In Short... Have they done a 'proper' job or have they just done a 'quickie'..

It's the oldest trick in the book to give a car back warm thats got tapping problems on initial startup..The only sad thing is they will want to hear it which will mean doing a cold start on their forecourt .. Got a video camera?? could give them a movie to watch..
