    Default Starting issues...

    Hi guys,

    When I start the car in the morning, or if it hasn't been used all day, the car is a little difficult to start. It has never failed to start, but it usually turns over a few times before catching. When it does start I get a plume of White smoke from the exhaust. There are no warning lights at all on the dash.

    The car is a 2007 Vectra 1.9 cdti 120

    Sounds like glow plugs, probably one or two on the way out. Try turning your ignition on until the coil light goes out, do not turn engine over, switch off and on again until coil goes out and then try to start it.     ive got same problem mate havent found cause as yet but i find if u leave glow light out wait till the buzzer stoped in boot it will start first time lol try that

    Does it start 'lumpy', as if it's starting on 3 cylinders then catching to 4?

    Does the white smoke smell 'fuelly' - unburnt diesel?

    White smoke with a fuelly smell is unburnt fuel and on a cold start is usually a sign of glow plugs (one or more out). If is starts bad then soon catches and runs and idles normally, I reckon it's nothing serious. If it carries on running and idling bad and missing when not under load, but picking up when the engine is under load then that usually points to low compression on a cylinder.

    You may have a failed 'quick release' joint in the fuel line that's causing an airlock / fuel to run back to the tank. The lift pump in the tank is clearing it if it's left on for a while.

    I have a v6 diesel and there's no lift pump in the boot on this model. On a 55 plate and have had at least 2 failed quick release joints and airlock problems. Cured (I hope) with re-plumbing the engine bay fuel lines and fitting a manual lift pump.

    Thanks for all the replys! Yeah once it's running it's fine...maybe a tad underpowered but I could be imagining it. In terms of connecting them to a bettery... How would i do that? Any ideas what sort of interval should they be changed? Thanks again!!

    Check to see if the swirl bar is still attached. My missus' car had the same issue (CDTi 150) amongst other issues, and it was an easy fix in a morning's work for me

    Hi tony what and where is the swirl valve, I have heard loads about it!! Also I have some carb cleaner... What does the spraying the car cleaner do and how do you do it?

    Don't worry about the manifold/swirl bar issues as this is only on the 150bhp versions

    This could be down to a number of things unfortunately, leak-off pipes or even down to the injector seals (copper washers) to name a few

    A few things that you could try to start with (cheapest options first) would be to clean the boost sensor/EGR valve and throttle body using carb cleaner/brake cleaner.

    Then as mentioned above it would be a bit of a suck-it-and-see job by replacing the leak-off pipes, if that doesn't change anything then it may be injector seals.

    Have a similar problem with mine and have been trying to indentify it myself

    There was another thread I read recently where the owner had noticed one of the cams had worn down (possible manufacturing defect) so was looking to re-shim the valves and this could have caused starting issues (ultimately the cam will need to be replaced) but as this is a new finding could be worth checking (quite an involved job though)
