    Unhappy 1.9 150 Inlet Manifold..

No, this isn't a manifold query, this is about the second - updated manifold - now on the road out. Lots of oil deposits around the swirl flaps themselves and I think I can even see some oil bubbling out of swirl 1. At a junction now - replace it or get it taken off and block the things off? Then I don't even know who would do it. Noticed that the valves sit open when the engine is off -funny I always thought they sit closed. Live and learn eh?

    Swirl Flap 1:

    Swirl Flaps 2 & 3:

    Swirl Flap 4:

It's not the end of the world of course and the bar, I doubt will fall off but there is definitely some deterioration in the flap bearings.

The deposits were sry originally so that was fine but now the deposits have become wet with oil. Checked with a bit of tissue and the oil is black. It can see that the breather next to the oil cap is black but I physically can not see how that will manage to get over to the swirl flaps. There seems to be alot of oil present of have evaporated under engine heat and then fall back on the manifold when the engine is cold from being off for a long time.

so your uprated manifold is now leaking... the way forward is to lock the flaps open & leave the actuator still attached, so am told

That is possibly my thinking now. Trouble is who'll do it?

any decent fabricator/welder should be able to do this... do you have an old manifold lying around

I'm in the same boat as you at the mo fella... i have oil around the pots although there's no loss of power & bar is intact, when i get round to fitting a new manifold i will clean up the old one & pass it on to a fabricator to see what they can do...
iirc there was someone on here already looking into welding their old one up.

Thing is that manfiold on mine right now has barely seen 50k. It was done 2 years ago.

Alanv6 I believe was looking into welding up the flaps.

I've got the manifold I took off mine (uprated one) sitting in the back of my car now mate. It's a bit dirty but works perfectly and with a bit of cleanup will be fine. Haven't you blanked your EGR off...?

So could you remove the flaps altogether and weld up the holes or seal them with bolts?
The flaps help the fuel and air mix better as it goes through the manifold improving the power available. Now for me a car manufacturer is not going to fit something when its not needed so they must serve a purpose but how much of a purpose is yet unproven because I do not know of any power runs before and after removal of the flaps.
Was the manifold a genuine VX one or an ebay/aftermarket one?

It might be worth cleaning the area with loads of carb cleaner and then see if the issue continues

BMW owners can actually buy a blanking kit for theirs... the swirl pots are there to improve the emissions at low revs
