    Default Towing 1.8 vvti

Does anyone tow in the 1.8 VVTi? Looking at a 2 berth caravan.

Pretty much run of the mill with no weight so what are the odds at moving along?

we towed a caravan years ago in a 1.8 vectra b it towed it fine but after the 3rd time of staying local we tried taking it further and it didnt cope to well going up hills we had to work the gears got us to rhyl from blackpool but on way home cambelt snapped just couldnt take strain
something good came out of it as we bought a v6 sri vectra b after that and we towed that caravan around the country and since then we always go for the big engine cars

It will tow just fine, ok its not going to rip a hole in the tarmac. My dad has towed caravans the length and breadth of this country in cars from a 1.3 Avenger Estate, 1.6 Cortina's a 2.3D Sierra which had a whole 68bhp!!!! He's towed caravans up and over Sutton Bank, in Yorkshire, using the cortina's and the sierra and back then caravans had full steel chassis' and not the lightweight chassis of todays 'van's.

they dont build them like that anymore
in the past ive had mk2 escorts and sierras and never once had any engine troubles and i was a teenager then went everywhere flat out the only problems was rust they were the days

when you drive around a campsite look at all the cars most are v6s and diesel oil burners cars or 4x4 this should tell you the best engine for the job you dont see many caravaners in a 1.8 this is the main reason why i buy v6 engine cars as i use to tow caravans
and have suffered by it using a 1.8

It all depends on how much the 2 berth van that you are intending to buy weighs tbh.

My last 2 berth van (ABI marauder) was 950kg max weight but my new one (Swift Corniche) is 1250kg

The swift has all the toys fitted and is longer hence the increased weight.

You will have to work the gears as i've not towed with a petrol that you've not had use the gears yet. Diesels have alot of torque meaning hills are easy work for them.

Best bit about caravanning is there is no hurry, if your in a hurry then your defeating the point of a caravan holiday

If you're just starting out don't buy a big expensive new van. You may not enjoy it, you may misjudge when towing and damage it etc. When your experience has increased and you've decided you enjoy it you can then buy a newer and better van.
