This is it http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45867 just click on the picture links.

Any other info just ask, done mine recently but I didn't strip the solenoid/spring mine was ok.

The rest of it was clogged with black soot. You may want to get a gasket set before starting. These are readily available on ebay for around £5.

    Vehicle : Vectra

    Trim : SRi

    Engine : 1.9 CDTi 8v

    Year : 55

    Mileage : 92,000

Decided to strip and clean my old EGR valve yesterday.

I had to replace it with a new one in November last year as I was getting the P0400 fault code.

So thought might as well overhaul this one and save it as a spare for when I come to clean out the new one then swap them over

On the valve side I cleaned all the carbon and crud out using a mix of petrol and gunk

The solenoid side was seized solid.

    Attachment 44466

So using the HOW-TO that jon7278 did (pdf format one attached below), I drilled the solenoid casing as directed and knocked out the inners. Took quite a bit of persuading to come out but persevered and after a few whacks with the lump hammer I finally had it all apart.

(Point to note:- make sure you don't lose the spring as they do ping out)

I sanded the middle bushing using P800 emery paper and did the same for the solenoid housing. I then put it all back together.

The pin slides up and down perfectly now

Tried to take a video of it but it didn’t come out too well, needed at least 3 hands and only had the crappy iphone to hand.

I have uploaded the vids to photobucket so you are welcome to view them and compare the action of your EGR (again sorry about the quality)

    Anyway, hope it helps

Has anyone got a picture of the engine bay as a whole identifying the EGR? I'm 99% sure mines not got one fitted, but I'm 50% sure I'm looking in the wrong place!!

    Thanks!

I don't waste time with it. Had two on the car and they were problematic, so mine is now blanked. No fuss, no crap in the inlet manifold and engine is smoother.

If the EGR valve is working fine, great, but I think keeping it clean is a waste, it's an item which shouldn't need to be cleaned anymore frequently than a year.

The design of it is poor and soot is allowed back into the sleeve and into the spring and solenoid areas of the valve actuator. The guide - which is a good one - details the shaft in the EGR valve which corrodes and causes the apparent sticking. The same effect is also by soot which manages to get trapped in the valve sleeve inside the housing. Either way both are a pain and both demand work - which I think is something owners shouldn't need to carry out - especially if you're going out to it ever 6 months. In that case blank it off imo. If the blanking takes your fancy have a read here:

I gave up with mine - a long while off.
