    Vehicle : vectra c 1.9cdti 120 estate

    Trim : design

Default What speeds do you use 5th and 6th gears

Hi, Running a 1.9cdti (120) Design estate - I'm a pretty steady driver and max speed is usually around 70 when safe to do so. I find that when cruising at 70 I can get better consumption figures in 4th gear than if I go up into 5th or 6th. Ok the revs drop in the higher gears but according to the computer the consumption is lower - just wondering what other owners think.

    Default

    i put mine into 6th around 60mph

fuel consumption may be higher but i doubt it, plus less revs = less wear and tear on engine

I upshift to keep the revs around 1500 as this seems the optimum engine speed to ease the life of the DMF

Got to agree with the OP im sure 4th is more efficiant up to 60 mph than 6th but just thought I was going a little mental. Think I mentioned it in a post on here once.

I stick mine in sixth at around 70mph. Seems smoother at that speed, any lower and it just doesn't feel right. Move into fifth at around 50mph.

depends on the road for me. on a totally flat road, i've sometimes used 5th gear at 30mph for the last 5 years (CDTI150). doesn't labour at all.

I'll agree with Hideous on that. Although I only really use 6th when I'm on the motorway with cruise control

    I change up at about 1700 revs. So 4th at 30, 5th at 40, and 6th at 50. 1.9CDTI 150.

    On my old 2.0T 5th at 30, and 6th at 40.
