Jailbreaking is not the same as unlocking, so the short answer to that is no.

If you want to unlock the phone to work on another network (assuming it is currently locked to O2 etc?) then you will first have to Jailbreak, then unlock using something like UltraSnOw.

Have a read at this, it might help: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

(If you fancy having a go at it, note that you have to be on a certain baseband for UltraSnOw to work.)

Could mean one of two things I reckon.

    Either:

    a) The handset has been properly unlocked by the carrier at the end of the previous owners contract, or

    b) It's been jailbroken and then unlocked using a method similar to the one I linked to above.

A "proper" unlock by the carrier would be far better to be honest. The jailbreak/unlock route does work ok, but each time a new firmware is released you have to wait on a suitable unlock method becoming available before you can upgrade your handset. Every time you update the firmware the handset loses the Jailbreak and is "relocked". It then needs Jailbroken and unlocked again. With a proper unlock you don't have this carry on.

I used to have an iPhone 3G, and it ran slow as a 3 legged donkey on the newer versions of firmware (iOS4). To be honest, unless you are getting the 3G for a steal, I don't know I'd bother. There are strong rumours that the iPhone 5 / iPhone 4S is due in September, so the prices of the faster 3GS's should hopefully drop a bit then, and one of then would be a better bet than the 3G if you are just looking for a cheapy iPhone.

    Just a thought....
