Default How long should brake pads last?

I have just had the car serviced at a local independent. I have to say it seems top job, good price and very very thorough. However I was concerned as they said both front and rear brake pads would need replacing soon (approx 2000 miles). I have done less than 20k and about a years driving after new VX pads on rear and VX disc and pad set on the front. How long should pads last?? I am hopeless when it comes to mechanicals and really would not know how worn the pads were as compared to new by looking at them. Any thoughts?

I don't think I'm that heavy on the brakes and most of my mileage is up and down the A1. I think I might get a second opinion

Blimey, 2000 miles on them in their opinion
I am usually advised there is 1000 miles left on them and they last anywhere up to 5000 miles
The front brake pad warning comes on and then there is at least another 1000 miles left
I have also had the rear pads right down to the last few nailclippings, the discs were going to be replaced anyway
I tend to wait until I can feel a reduced brake efficiency, then have them replaced, this is normally before the front brake pad warning appears

The pads are relatively easy to inspect on the SRI, just make sure there is still material left on the outer pads

Finally, the original rears pads don't tend to last very long, and the rear pads don't last very long in general compared to the front pads

My front pads typically last 20K miles, the rear pads vary from 20K miles (new) to 40K miles (replacements)

All depends on your driving and what pads were put in the last time, some last longer than others. I put Pagid pads on this time last year, just serviced them and I doubt the rears will make it to this time next year, that's only going to be around 15K miles. Most garages will let you know if they dont think that you will make the next service.

    And where you park.

Garage, less corrosion on the discs during wet weather and thus less abrasion to the pads when you next use the car.

    Outside - see above.

By the coast, double the corrosion when parked up.

hmmmm,.. I live by the coast and park outside and my figures of 48k rear and still on fronts after 72k from new seems very good then.... unless my pads are made of bloomin well done steak
