really depends on what your after and how much money you want to spend.... you can get some good "bridge" cameras that take nice pictures and do high definition video for £300 or you can goto the expense of digital SLR with lenses ... the final decision is yours ...

the difference in the quality of buying a dedicated camera and a dedicated Video camera rather than a combo has to be seen though ...

some of the camera combos dont auto focus ... some of them are very limited on what they do ...

for a baby you cant beat video for the first gurgle ..the first smile the first step the first word etc ...

also handy for the first boyfriend/girlfriend embarrasing parents moment

but a picture also paints a thousand words

    so whats your budget ???

with the correct video software you would be able to pull a "still" from the video to make a print ...

just make sure that its going to do what you want ... there's no point in paying out for something only to find it needs replacing later .... adding more expense than paying a bit more to start with and leaving you with kit you no longer need

been there ..done that and got the T-shirt

Digital Camcorders tend to take rubbish 'still' photos (in my experience), whereas a good quality digital camera (be it compact, bridge or DSLR) can come with excellent HD video capabilities for a very reasonable price.

I did allot of research (for my own needs) and ended up with a Canon S95 compact... 1084 full HD video... full manual control and produces pictures on par (if not better) than most budget DSLR's.
