Question Driving style for best MPG

    Hi Guys,

    I've had a Vectra C 1.9 cdti 120 since May.

I regularly get about 40mpg around town, after servicing last week and a good stretch of her legs over the weekend i now appear to be getting 45mpg (both worked oit the old school way as i don't have the mpg display on my dash).

My question is what do you find as the best driving technique around town to deliver the best mpg?

Shift up @ 2000rpm or 2500 rpm, or do you change gear with speed (up to 10 in 1st, 20 in 2nd, 30 in 3rd etc)

Some people have suggested not using 4th gear @ 30 mph etc and not using 6th below 60mph.

    Thanks, Matt

If you want the back to basics one, it's drive off as soon as possible, "warming" the enngine up just wastes fuel. Don't take the car to max revs in every gear, be light footed on the brakes and throttle as much as possible. Try to do everything smoothly.

For me its lowest possible gear without laboring - that means about 1300rpm minimum. 4th at 30mph is just about possible on the flat/slight downhill

Don't accelerate up hills - maintain a constant speed

Come off the throttle early on the run up to junctions, rbts etc and let the engine braking slow the car down - maintaining a good gap with the car in front helps in this respect.

I also use cruise a lot (even at 30!) to stop the speed creeping up.

Get yourself a 2.2dti then you'll know where you stand cos the fuel consumption is always bad!

My turbo starts to come in around 1500revs, I can here the whistle. I'm not actually trying to drive economically, so my driving will differ - and mine's an auto.
I don't go on revs/speed, I go by engine tone. I'd say only use around 2/3rds revs (before the red line) in each gear. Let the turbo come in as usual, just drive easy, ie as if you're way early for an appointment and you have to arrive on time. Not sure how to explain it, hope this helps.

Never drive straight off, give it 30 seconds plus to ensure the turbo is fully lubricated as it drains of oil when the engine is off and driving straight off can and does reduce the life of the bearings.

I drive around town with the revs as low as possible without straining the engine which is usually just above 1000rpm. I change up a gear around 1500rpm except 1st to 2nd which you have to get to about 1800rpm in 1st.

The less boost you produce, the less fuel the ECU will put in and obviously the better the economy as a result. I use 5th gear for 30mph zones unless it's on an up hill in which case I'll use 4th. My engine does not struggle in any gear at 1500rpm even up hill.
