    Default New Alternator

I think my Alternator is starting to die.

Last night I decided to check the tyre pressures, so I started the engine and plugged in my Compressor into the accessory socket.

I then spent about 10 mins (with the engine still running) inflating the tyres.

When I got back in the car to switch it off the Powersteering light was on? I also tried the power steering and it wasn't working.

I turned the engine off and cleared the many fault codes.

Restarted the car and this time I had the TC light on.
Again stopped the engine and cleared the codes.

After a third restart I had no codes shown and I monitored the voltage, it was around the 13.5v mark.

Today driving the car to work I monitored the voltage and it was 13.8v when driving and it dropped a bit when idle.

Does this sound like the Alternator to you guys?

If so how do I know what Alternator I need?
The one that is in the car was replaced a couple of years ago and its a cheap aftermarket one that throws a fault code "P0621-01 Generator lamp "L" control circuit malfunction"

So I want a proper one this time!

The normal voltage is usually between 13.8 - 14.1. Not sure if the 1.9 has temperature compensation but if it has 13.8 is ok considering yesterdays temperatures. Monitor the voltage whilst starting, I wouldn't expect it to drop much below 11.0 volts. If it does it could be the battery but re-charge overnight and try again before replacing. Hope this helps.

Is this whilst the engine is running under no load (everything off lights, blower etc)?

Or just with ignition on engine off?

I 've just replaced mine this week. The first sign I had of a problem was the "battery" light coming on whilst driving. A few days later though, the power steering light came on quickly followed by abs/car&spanner and a range of others. The AA came out to me and diagnosed the alternator as the problem. From what I was told at the garage, there are 3 possible alternators on my model....56 plate 1.9 cdti 150, and one of them is particulary expensive. Fortunately, mine was the cheaper option at £240 all inc.
