    Default Engine coolant

I have started to notice that my temperature gauge does not increase while I am driving. I drive long distances on motorway and temp still does not move. It only moves when in traffic, it will move to the middle and stay there but decrease to 0 once moving again.

    My car is a 2003 vectra c 1.8 16v LS

I suspect i will need to replace thermostat which will mean removing thermostat housing.

What is the best coolant to refill the car with? It is currently blue at the moment.

Ps any help or information about thermostats please let me know.

    Thanks

It shouldnt be. If it is change it ASAP. All engines in the Vec range require the orange/red OAT coolant, it is long life and has anti corrosion properties as well as lubricating the water pump properly. Someone has changed it for the blue stuff which is only marginally cheaper than the correct OAT coolant.

BTW yes you are correct in thinking the thermostat is knackered, easy and cheap to replace though, i'll get you the how2 for it

Thanks Das Arab for your reply

I did a test today to see if i could check. I squeezed each of the water pipes when engine off and when squeezed I could feel the water passing through and in the tank.

Thanks for your info on the coolant, i have no idea what the differences in coolant were. I will definitely replace with the pink stuff. Had a look on halfords:-

    Either this:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...Id_229902#dtab

    or the already mixed one:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...k&iozone=PDPz1

What would you recommend for me.

Any how2 guides would be fantastic buddy as i have never done this procedure before.

(Hope that crap ant done any damage to the water pump or hoses then)

    Thanks guys for your reply's.

I am looking into the Halfords stuff listed above. Anyone got any recommendations?

Thanks for the how2 guide. A wee question. I am planing on buying the thermostat on its own if possible without the housing. In doing this can I just reuse the the old gasket (after cleaning the areas). Will any sealant be required as i was not planning on using any?

Is it cheaper to buy from VX instead ??

    Thanks

Check with your local VX dealer, sure its only around £18 for 5Lt of the concentrated stuff. you need to achieve a protection of -28 so id avoid the ready mixed stuff tbh. Penfold just got a good deal off ebay for his VX Coolant, i'll see if I get a link.

You will get away with 3lt btw. Yes if you buy the insert thermostat of ebay you can reuse the original gasket, I did, but you will need some instant gasket seal to seal it.

Ahh thanks for the link. I have added it to my watch list until i check with the Vauxhall dealer to see how much they charge.

Is this the stuff that would work ok?? I think this is the stuff you used?

Do you know much about these newly designed thermostats that when they stick, they only stick open as it is better than closed. Is this common with them all now or do i need to go looking for this type of thermostat?
