Default New owner - V6 CDTI - Head gasket??

Hi guys, after a terrible experience with buying a knackered signum from a trader I managed to get my money back and buy a Vectra 3.0ctdi. However I think I have been shafted a second time....

I bought a car and drove home today and I noticed on the motorway after acclerating briskly the temperature gauge rose up over 95+....

After the gauge went up I drove home very gently and the gauge went back below 90. I got home and checked the coolant level... the engine was hot and there was barely a dribble of milky/rusty water left in the expansion tank........ however, the previous day when I left the deposit on the car the tank was full of obviously new cherry coloured coolant. The oil looks fresh and non-milky.

I topped up the coolant and ran the engine with the expansion cap off.... the tank frothed over with air bubbles/watery mixture upon revving the engine.

I'm figuring the head gasket is fooked???

Also I have a P0380 fault code - Glow time relay circuit malfunction. I reset the code but it appears again as soon as the ingintion is turned on. Any ideas? - I was told the car just had a major service including new glow plugs and it only needed the spanner light resetting!

However on closer inspection the 'invoice' for the work looks a bit like it could be a fake and the garage name doesn't appear to exist on google.

    100k.

Bought it from a dealer... probably should have had alarm bells ringing when he kept saying 'trade sale'. That combinded with a reciept which basically states I am a trader and have no comeback as a trade sale. Even though I'm clearly a not a trader and paid retail money. (anyway, would a trader or mechanic fail to spot a fooked engine like muggins here did?!!).

He also sold me a warranty with the car at an additional £300, but I'm not sure if that is going to be worth the paper it is written on as the fault was clearly pre-existing at the time of purchase (I barely got 20miles down the road ffs).

I just can't believe this, in the last month I've bought 3 cars all from dealers. One signum which died on the motorway 3 days later - got my money back after a fight. One vectra which after a MOT history check, turned out to be clocked from 155k to 85k, again got my money back after threatening trading standards....... and now this one!

Car is a 2005 3.0 cdti. 101k.. I paid 3100 with the warranty, which seems about the going rate on autotrader/ebay for higher mile ones? - I don't think it was exceptionally cheap or a 'bargain' and therefore could excuse a major fault.

Unless I'm being incredibly naive, a 3k car should be capable of driving 30miles home and be capable of providing a few months reliable motoring? I've bought £800 bangers which have lasted years before.

Not sure what to do now, I'm going to get the car taken to a garage tomorrow and then go from there.

Any ideas what a head gasket would cost?

Did you buy from a trader mate if so take it back.

As the v6 headgasket is a mahoosive job. Trust me. I bought my v6 with headgasket failed. An your looking at about 15-16 hours of labour.

First point if it's not from a trader. Is check expansion bottle for any minor cracks etc. top up coolant and ensure all air is ok of system allow it to get to working pressure an check for leaks.

Drive carefully after ensure you take water and get it sniff tested.

But as I say if it was from a trader get it straight back to them

If you need Vauxhall part numbers give me a shout.
Thickest head gasket I got for 50 quid each plus the stretch bolts.

The most expensive part is your timing belt. Cheapest I found was 162+ vat

Thanks, really appreciated... hoping it is just something minor, but really I know it is bad news!

I Bought from a (small) dealer as explained in my second post... he made a point of saying 'trade sale' etc etc... but at the same time sold me a warranty for 'peace of mind' and I paid pretty much the market price I think... certainly not auction prices anyway. I was pretty much in love with the car when I signed the reciept without really reading it!! Only now I'm at home and reading through all the papers can I see all the disclaimers and the fact that he has listed my name as MR XXX trading as XXX cars from Coventry! Which is a complete fabrication!

He must have known it had a problem and I think I've been stiched up to be honest.

Sounds like your going to have a problem mate. And tbh a don't think a 3rd party insurance will cover it.

An if it does most only cover first 500 which will barely cover parts :-(

the v6 dont really suffer with head gasket failure ...tends to be the liners slip if the liners have slipped replaceing the head gaskets may fix the problem in the short term , they normally need a complete engine .........
