Default Engine Management Light came on, no apparent turbo afterwards..?

Hi, I have an 05 Plate 1.9 Signum DTI. I was driving home tonight, and felt a loss of power whilst on a dual carriageway. Engine management light came on (Spanner over car??), car ticked along steadily at 70-80, but was lacking the guts of normal. Pulled off and onto a side road, and when moving up the gears, there was a real lack of surge around the rev range where the turbo usually kicks in, if anything the power distinctly died off...
Any ideas what this could be. I know there are hundreds of options, but from anyone's experience, are we talking major issue potentially with the turbo, or maybe something less like a hose or sensor that has gone??
Still drived fine and has usual power up until turbo range, but definite lack of turbo kicking in then.

    Default

When the eml light comes on , if its a serious fault the ecu shuts down all actuators and goes into limp mode, thats why you lost the turbo.
