Egr, clean the egr as per the 'how 2' section, also clean the boost sensor & the throttle body wouldn't go a miss also, all of the how 2's are easy to follow & need no special skills.

Most use carburettor cleaner - I did mine with oven cleaner and left it over night before cleaning off with stiff brush

Not according to the label on the tin it isn't - but make sure you rinse it off properly - good for cleaning alloy wheels as well!

Depends what's in it - if it's caustic (sodium hydroxide), then it attacks aluminium violently. The newer ones are polycarboxylate based and are very good. Try it on something that doesn't matter first. Some dishwasher tablets are polycarboxylate based, so you might have some lying around in your home already!

Hi, Thanks for that - I've just had a look on the tin and it does contain polycarboxylate and says suitable for aluminium finishes - experimented on an old aluminium brake caliper before cleaning the EGR and left it for 2 days before rinsing off with no ill effects. If you consider that oven cleaner removes that baked on stuff in your oven - cleaning the carbon from an EGR valve is a piece of cake. And its relatively cheaper than anything else - got mine from the pound shop.
