Auto lights face lift model

Hi I've got one of the Vectra 1.8 VVTi estates (Design model) with the auto light function. I find that the lights turn on OK and sometimes turn off OK whilst driving but other times the lights just stay on until I turn the engine off.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Sounds like back to Vx to me if they are turning off in the dark, sounds like a design fault, sensor is probably reading un natural light.

No sorry, the lights come on say when it gets darker or through a tunnel and stay on. Then when we emerge into light again they should I understand turn off. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

They always stay on once one, I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this temperamental function.

Mines too old to have them, but i will say this, I have auto wipers, and they dont always work properly either.

Only simple thing I can think of is this, do you know where the sensor is on the car, if so check it isn't dirty, I'd imagine that would cause that to happen, still sounds like a Vx jobby to me though, probably the sensor at fault. hth

i think quite a few people with the auto lights have expressed the same things are you.

they come on just fine when entering a tunnel or when it gets dark but they don't turn off as quickly they turn on. possibly due to some safety feature whereby you don't want the person infront of you thinking you are flashing them every time you drive under a bridge.

sounds like these are more hassle than they're worth.

they certainly can be a pain, yet sometimes they turn off as quickly as they turn on.

Thanks for the advice, I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's taken their car back to Vx because of them

Yep I also have auto lights and recently with the slightly darker mornings they take an age to go off if at all - I drove to work this morning and it was sunny ... an hours drive ... arrived in Stockport at around 9 and they didn't switch off once ... I think the light was just below the threshold to switch off. They seem to have a higher threshold to switch off than they do to switch on, also this is combined with a time delay as Harry says to ensure it doesn't look like you are flashing people as you drive through tunnels so Shadows will reset this time delay ... that's what I find anyway.
