Is there supposed to be a pic of a coil come up on the display when starting the engine?
And also is the spanner supposed to come up for a few seconds when starting?

Assuming you're driving a deisel, it's the glow plug light mate. The spanner light is normally on during start, and once the engine management knows the engine's running and everything is fine it goes out...
On a 2003?
What engine?
I agree, coil should briefly appear
Spanner should never appear, only appearing if something is wrong
its a 2003, 2.2 dti.
No coil comes up, thats why im asking wether it should.
The car and spanner comes up when you first turn the ignition on and goes out again like the other lights etc. is that right?

no coil sign until it gets down to about 5º c and i dont get the spanner sign when i fire mine up..
im sure that means its got old codes stored that need clearing, and i think that if the coil lights up, it means theres a fault with the glow plug system
2.2 dti.... 54 plate.
al.
******. Ill have to get that checked out then.
Each model is probably different, but if there's no lights on when the engine is running then there's no issues. If the coil comes on for a few seconds then goes out, and it's cold outside, then it's the glow plug light. If it doesn't come on then it's above 5 degrees. If you're not having any problems starting, then you've nothing to worry about mate...
the coil light is not an issue. It hasnt come on at all but im assuming thats because its not cold enough. Just thought it might come on all the time because my 58plate movano does.
Its the spanner/car light that comes on when ignition is turned on that i was worried about..
As far as I am aware, the coil light should always appear briefly (see handbook)
On first start for about 2 to 5 seconds, depending on temperature
On second, or more, starts it may not appear or for less than 2 seconds
On mine it appears for about 2 seconds
Also on subsequent starts it always appears briefly
However, if I switch off and back on again straight away it does not appear
On a previous car it would appear for about the same amount of time
However, near the end of the life of the glow plugs the light stayed on for much longer
The one nearest the glow plug relay was white in colour and had failed, so all four were replaced
