confused Idle problem, loss of power, engine management light on.

    Hi all,

I have a 2001 VECTRA DIESEL HATCHBACK 2.0 DTi LS 5dr [AC] which has the following issues:

When the car warms up the engine management comes on and the car at idle is very lumpy, the REV's go up and down and the REV counter stops working completely. When I put my foot on the accelerator gently the car seems to tick over a lot smoother until I take my foot back off the accelerator and the lumpiness returns.

When I drive the car it seems smooth enough although I think the car is running in some sort of safe mode as there is not much power. Yesterday whilst driving the light went out and the car returned to its normal performance and drove nicely although the light has now returned.

I got the error code read by a friend who said the error that kept returning after clearing the ECU was: 'No RPM from ECU'. I will get the exact code off of him this afternoon.

I'm thinking it could be the crank shaft sensor after reading similar problems although I'm no expert. What do you think? Where would you start?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Coyney

Could be as you said your crank shaft sensor, or maybe your throttle position sensor, a faulty tps will give you the hunting revs on tick over ,
Post up your fault codes and we take it from there

    Thanks for the reply.

The error codes are: P0725 and an old code which came up was P1335.

Would these point towards the Crank shaft sensor?

P0725 points towards your crank case sensor, have a look at this thread looks to be the same fault on a vec-b as well

Hi thanks for your help. I changed the crankshaft sensor today and it has cured the problem. However the engine light has come back on and the error code reads:

    P0400 - Critical System Malfunction

Any ideas what this could be I might check the hoses in a bit to see if one of them has been knocked off. The engine light only comes on when driving slow or I stop; otherwise it stays off.

It's driving really nicely. Any ideas??

    Many thanks.

P0400 points towards your egr , check the electrical connection to the egr this has been known to give problems when removed or disturbed ,
The wires to the egr are often quite tighty strung so any load put on them often leads to faults being generated
