Default 1.8 VVTI and Airbox mod

I've only had my 1.8 for a few weeks and I did the airbox mod straight away - it made a subtle difference to the throttle response on my older cdti so I thought I may as well.

Thing is, on the 1.8 I find it very hesitant on the throttle, and then its up to 2k rpm at the slightest touch which makes it a nightmare in traffic. I've also noticed a sort of 'drone'/engine boom at 2k rpm regardless of road speed so i'm wondering if the air box mod does more harm than good on the petrol engines?

I did the airbox mod on mine and I wouldn't say it's done anything to harm the engine. Along with a k&n air filter it seems to be a little more responsive, though it's probably all in my head

I'm toying with idea of a k&n air filter - would it smooth out the 'jerk' I seem to get on and off the throttle (usually at 40mph plus)

20,000 mile with the air box mod done, and have no problems. did you fit a NEW air filter when you did it?

No, the air filter was almost new when I did this. Barely any muck showing at all. 3k since the last service so it looks like it was changed then.

your drone/engine boom, are realy sure its coming from the engine,, when I first got this vec at lowish revs I could hear what I thought was a drone engine boom, had to change the tyres (ling longs) to Falken and the noise was gone

The drone seems to come exactly at 2000rpm - regardless of the road speed. The tyres are fairly cheap ones though.

I 'undid' the airbox mod, and blasted some carb cleaner through the throttle body and it now seems less jerky on and off the throttle. Still a jumpy so and so in 1st and 2nd!

ok, if thats made it a bit better, I SUGGEST REDEX INJECTOR CLEANER,, I used it every fill up for the first few tank fulls and did seem to smooth things out, now use it every third fill or so.

I haven't used Redex since the carburettor days! Will give that a shot in the next full tank. Cheers
