does the pc run onboard graphics or a seperate card?..on board and the connections are all together in one place, like a rectangle.

Seperate card and it will be lower down the case in a single 'bay'..

If you got both you will need to get into the systems bios and change the option from onboard to pci or vice versa..

If nothing is displaying on the screen then I would say graphics card or (unlikely though) there has been a fatal overvoltage in the motherboard and has destroyed components.

its a AMD ATHLON so odds on removing the battery will work just keep it out for a hour or so i normanly do it for 10 mins when their in for repairs make sure you unplug it from mains first

also why you have battery out take memory out and give the memory slots a blow with a can of air i use to have a dimension 5000 and every few mth use to do the same thing and always memory was dusty also when you put the memory back put one stick in plug it back in and try if it switches on unplug then put 2nd in try it etc etc this way if theirs any problem with any of the memory you will know which stick has the problem

also why you have it open give every where a blow to get rid of any dust near fans etc as the better it can breath the better it will run

good luck you should be fine you have a dell computer dont get many of these in to repair as they dont go wrong much
