Before I sold my GSi, I reckon I'd have got around 18k miles from the Rainsport 2's (225/45-18)on the front before they dropped to 2mm and that was with an auto box. (5.5mm left after 7k miles)

As for Rainsports on the rear, they had 7mm on them after 7k miles.

Ahh, would have done that if id have known! Would it not give issues using a slightly wider tyre?
Your speedo will slightly over-read, but that's about it.

Better to over-read than under-read, IMHO.

The 225/45/17 is the alternate sized tyre that's mentioned in the handbook.

I've just put the front tyres (Rainsport 2's) on the rear. They've done 15,000 miles and have 4mm of tread remaining on them. I'm a lead footed driver, btw.

Thanks mate, will bear that in mind for the next set of tyres!

I use the Continental Conti Sport 2. I have 19's on my car 235/35 ZR19 91Y, So far I've had 40,000 miles out of a set. Although they are quite expensive they are very good with good grip in the dry and the wet and long lasting.

I bought the car at 23,000 miles and it had one Michelin on which must have replaced a damaged tyre because it would have been too soon to have worn down and that tyre has worn faster than the originals and is now right on the limiter and the one on the other side (original Conti) has still had 1-2mm off the limiter when I changed the Michelin.
