mine was doing the rev limit thing when the fuel pump was playing up but this got worse very quickly and was terrible to drive, not just a one gear thing.

4000rpm limit comes in for a variety of engine sensor faults - cam or crank sensor are the most common.

I've spent a few weeks sorting out a cam sensor fault - the symptoms being that it'd about 2 out of 3 times you start the engine, it'd drive perfectly normally but won't go over 4000rpm. Turn the engine off and restart it, and it goes back to normal operation, revving over 4000rpm.
If you disconnect the battery for a bit, or use an OBDII reader to blank the fault code, then it will put on the engine fault light when the fault next occurs. However, after about 3 or 4 starts, it will turn off the light and not put it on again, but the rev limit is still there.

Get your fault codes read (easy on a 1.8, just hold down brake an accelerator and turn ignition on, but that doesn't seem to work for the other engines), and hopefully it'll be an easy fix.
