    Default cdti turbo noise

the car sounds like it has a mini dump valve kind of sound foot down normal driving and change gear a sort of slight pishh is this normal never noticed it before

also never noticed it on all my diesel turbos mondeo ghia, golf tdci, laguna, passat and x-trail

also the turbo is really loud on the car is this right for a vectra as the above cars i could hardly hear the turbo if at all

mine done this when i bought it cdti120 to be on the safe side for the sake of an hour under the car get the inlet and outlet off the turbo and check the shaft/turbines for play, My turbo's just siezed and don't know whether it's damaged my engine yet so well worth checking every few months, Also been advised to change banjo bolt on turbo every year now which i intend to do when i sort my car out

does it sound like a distant siren??

    Morning all,

I get this on my cdti 120, I have checked everything under the bonnet, and had a mechanic look over the car.

Just to rest my mind at ease, I have had the car hooked up to tech2 and fully serviced (it was due and at 90k anyway) & the turbo checked and all pipes checked.

Mine sounds the same as described above, although sounds more like actuator chatter, than a dump valve.

Quite like the sound, but don't believe it's anything to worry about.

That sounds like an unresponsive actuator/vacuum control solenoid or sticking VNTs to me. The pishh noise is likely pressure backing up through the turbo and air box. Normally when you dump the clutch or come off the accelerator, the ECU very quickly backs off the turbo. If the turbo is not backing off quick enough, it could cause the this.

Hi Nutron you seem to have 1st class knowledge on turbos, Is there any way to test the vnt whilst the turbo is off the car?? only asking as someone is selling a turbo and they say the actuator is broke but easily replaced off my old turbo. Cheers Tommy

There really isn't anyway you can test for this on the engine without fitting a digital boost gauge like mine to plot graphs of boost over time and see how the turbo is responding to demand.

If it is not effecting the driving, I would leave it alone for now. The only option to check the turbo over is to remove it. Out of interest, do you have a boost gauge fitted at all? If it is slow to respond, you may experience large boost spikes too when changing gear or suddently increasing accelerator demand.

You can get a self sealing fitment any of the rubber hoses post the turbo or have a custom pipe made up with a nipple on it. I would recoment using the last pipe before the inlet manifold.
