Default Flat battery, now no power steering

I went out to my signum this morning to find the battery was dead, no idea why though. Car is used every day so it's not like it's been sat there. The only thing that has been added recently was an iPhone charger but that doesn't charge with the power off so I don't see how it could drain my battery

Anyway I gave it a jump start of the missus van and away I went only to find I had no power steering and no dash. Radio screen was on but not doing anything.

I was going to try charging the battery over night tonight but I wasn't sure if I would need the code for the radio. I know they are paired to the car so I thought it might just pop back on and away we go.

Any advice on the possible causes of the flat battery or the code are appreciated

Alternator's gone mate. Classic symptoms of it. Get it tested, but I think you'll find that's what it is.

Great! Is it worth charging the battery? Do I need the code?

It'll allow the car to run for a short while assuming the battery's still ok, but I wouldn't be using it for anything more than a couple of miles if I was you.

What Ian said. I had the same problem a couple of months ago, flat attery no ps etc., changed the alternator, job's a good'un.

If you do intend to use the car with the duff alternator you'll risk completely knackering your battery, as what electrical load the vec uses will be drawn directly frm the battery , and you'll end up possibly having to replace the battery as well as the alternator.

As for the radio code, sorry can't help you there mate i use an aftermarket h/u.

    For the stereo?

Depends on whether yours is full can or halfcanbus.

    Full canbus = no
    Half canbus = yes.

If your steering wheel has 6 buttons on it, then it's half canbus.
If your steering wheel has 4 buttons and 2 scroll wheels on it, then it's full canbus.

Well I took the battery out and charged it overnight and dropped it back in this morning. Started straight away and everything works.

    BUT

Engine management now on and battery warning light on as well

That's because it's taking all it's power from the battery because the alternator's not charging.
