Default Alternator problemish / wheel loose, fallen of

    Hi all

Got a cool new problem with my car today..

Backed out of the parkinglot outside the store and suddently i heard a bang from the front of the car..
I though i hade driven over a rock or something.. but no damage..

On the way home the battery warning ligth came on... I turned of the engine, waited a few minutes and turned it back on.. no ligth.. but after 5 min it came back..

Ok the alternator is defect i thought and took it with ease.. but i wanted to check if the fanbelt was tight..

Must say i got a rather shock when i noticed that the wheel on the bottom was fallen of and the fanbelt was completely loose...

Now i have to get the car with a towing car to a workshop...

Is this a common problem on theese cars?

Yes, this is a known problem with the DTI if you mean the crankshaft pulley. There tends to be no warning that it's about to happen. It's made of separate inside and outside parts and they can come apart.

The belt drives the water pump so it's best to switch off the engine immediately to prevent overheating. Did you notice the temperature rising above normal before you switched off the engine?

If this is what has happened, you need a new crankshaft pulley and bolt. Some people have had luck with cheaper aftermarket pulleys but they can be too heavy and cause vibration so be careful.

Use the search function to turn up useful information about this on here like these (make sure you read only the ones relating to the DTI), this one, and this one.

Ahh same problem i had on my mitsubishi L200...
But then i will tell my mechanic this and ask him to sort this out asap.

I dont think i damaged something regarding heat.. didnt check the temperature, but i drove for max 4 minutes.

Just hope i can get an appointment asap at the workshop... summertime is busy time!

Think i will get a truck that can transport my car to the shop tomorow!

Thank you so much for the answer James!

Got an appointment at the garage today.. july 18th..... But ive got a great ensurance that gives me a free rental car and free transport of my car to the garage until they can tell if the damage is covered by the ensurance or not!

But either way, this is gonna cost me a few holliday bucks.. ¤#%¤%

Its quite expensive here in Norway so the cost will be aprox 700-800£

Got my car back on friday.. only £465 due to a great insurance!

Must say the handling of the car was much better now.. Ive had a problem with shaking and rumbling in the stearingwheel etc..

Changed the flywheel some months ago, but that did not help.. After they changed this crankshaft pulley now it handles much better.

Anyway.. one more thing thats fixed on this moneypit of a car!
