Default Help! Misfire on cylinders 3 & 4

    Hi,

I have a 2003 Vectra 1.8 petrol which is misfiring on cylinders 3 & 4. I have replaced the coil pack (brand new) and replaced spark plugs but still no luck. The leaflet with the coil pack said to reset the ecu, which I did by disconnecting the battery for 1hr.

Not sure what to try next? As a bit of background info the car has been lumpy for the past few weeks but still fully drivable, today on the way to work each time I pressed the throttle and put the engine under load I could hear a loud sound like a ratchet sound but when I took my foot off the pedal the sound immediatley stopped, shortly after the EML light came on and I lost most of the power.

Try checking/cleaning ecu plugs (think this is located above gear box on side of engine).

my old vectra b had a misfire changed allsorts dis pack leads plugs checked all sorts it turned out to have a bent valve only found out after i sold it, the person who bought it had a compression test done and stright away found the problem it was a v6 so didnt notice that much it was just very lumpy up to about 2k revs then picked up
eml light came on as well with it same as yours
for what they cost you can buy a compression tester for around £25 just to check to rule it out
i might be completly wrong just going off past experence

Brings back memories of the last time I did a compression check. Years ago on a Rover SDI 2.3 straight six, the engine was blowing steam. So when I tested one cylinder, as soon as I turned the engine over, it blew the compression tester out of the plug hole and it flew out like a bullet. It did this the 3 times I tried it. Glad no one was standing in front of it.

Had similar problems, turned out to be a blocked cat. Is the engine getting very hot?
