The basic difference with front fogs is that they are mounted lower, and have a wide, flat beam pattern - the wide part could be dazzling to oncoming traffic in non-foggy conditions, thus driving with them on is illegal unless in reduced visibility.

The manner in which the light is produced, be it incandescent, led or other has little to do with it if the beam pattern produced is the same ie wide and flat.

With rear fogs it is the greater intensity or brightness that makes it a foglamp. Again, the method of producing the light is irrelevent if it is noticeably brighter than normal rear lights under normal, clear conditions.

Those vehicles with the led daylight running lights as standard will have had them approved prior to the model receiving type approval, so whoever dishes out the E mark is happy they are not too bright or produce an unacceptable beam pattern.

Take a gander at RVRLs and as long as you are happy you comply, then don't worry.

Actually, just having had a quick gander through RVRL 1989, Sch 6, there isn't a great deal of actual regulation on front fogs as long as they are postioned correctly, show white or yellow light, are adjustable when you're stopped and they bear an approval mark. Legally, it seems very lax.

Driving with foglights on will get you pulled as plod think if you are ignoring one law then you may be ignoring others - even if you're not you'll still be delayed. Two cars with foglights on park near some gents toilets near where I drive to work, it must be an electrical problem as they seem to have their bonnets up as well...

Bottom line buddy - yes it's illegal. Doesn't matter what bulbs you use, they will still be fog lights. Drl's and mini type lights as said are type approved.
