Really you'd need to work out the actual MPG rather than relying on the needle alone. I've noticed the marks on my 2.2dti aren't even regards mileage ie full to next mark down is 100miles, next mark down from there is 50miles, then next mark is 50, then another 100 giving me 300 total by half way. Odd but I've gotten used to it.

As above. The tank is not a box, or anywhere near it, so the needle doesn't move linearly throughout the range. Mine does 100 miles before it even starts moving, gets to about 400 by halfway, but only gets to about 650 ish by the end of the range. The speed it moves varies throughout.

You need to brim the tank, drive till it's nearly empty, brim it again, and using the amount of fuel you put in the second time versus the mileage you've done you can work out the economy...

This is quite interesting as i've just done completed a full inlet manifold clean, new EGR and silicone boost and vacuum pipes on my 2.2DTI.

Even before the above I would get no more than 420 miles to a full tank and now I get 460 miles. 60% of my daily drive is motorway and the rest A roads. How can you be getting over 600 miles to a tank on a 2.2?

Should have done a bit better research I think. CDTI's give a lot more on MPG than the old oil burners. My best average is 52Mpg but that is hard to get and tend to hover around 48Mpg which is still quite good for the old lady.
