Default If a 1.9 CDTI 150 has been standing for a year.....

....what are potential problems it could have?

Its been unused since about last August. Been parked up doing nowt really.

Spanner light is now on after a short drive.

What could be the issue, or is it impossible to tell?

Yes, this is a car im going to look at and the lady has said that she will let me plug my laptop in to check the issues but what else should I be looking for on a car thats been stood idle?

    Thanks.

impossible to tell but look at the usual suspects first, ie EGR stuck? Does it fire up ok? Sticky/rusted brakes. Has it killed the battery through lack of being charged?

EVERYTHING WILL NEED TO BE CHANGED

    oil and filter
    fuel filter
    brake fluid
    prob pads front and rear
would consider timing belt tensioner and water pump

and just a really good going over to check everything

Start perfect, on the button so to speak. Nothing seems seized up. Its been driven last week, albeit around the block, and not by me.

Will need a full service anyway.
If its been standing, will that affect cambelt, pump, etc?

Was previously used within their own company, then they bought themselves a couple of new vehicles with the intention of giving this to another employee, as it was used by one that had left, but that never happened and this just sat there.

Oh, MOT and TAX are both out too.

I will also be ripping the engine cover off to check the swirl bar. Should I touch it to see if its still attached or not? OR if it moves, should it be deemed OK?

yeah it could affect water pump , as its not been used the water pump bearing could have seized and belt may have deteriorated by lack of use as its tight it may have started to crack

    is it cheap ??

Not at the moment, its at probably a little below going rate, but I discussed with the owner yesterday evening and said that its going to need a heck of a lot of work. I already hit the trigger and said that potentially im looking at about a grand worth of potential repairs (with a minimum of £500 for cambelt and service).

My other THREAD is what im hoping to use a negotiation tool to beat them up on price.

If its stood doing nothing, my moto for my own possessions is usually that id rather get shot of it and get something, than leave it sat there, spend more on it and then get about the same. Worth a try IMHO!
