just brouht a multimeter could somebody tell me what settin it needs to o on please to test for a signal for the central locking

If its Canbus you need a canbus reader as the datta packet (Digital signal) is sent really fast.

what kind of meter ? what range does it have ?.....what you looking for ?.......you wont find a canbus signal with a multimeter

brought a argos one with soldering iron and screw drivers for £15 its done the job worked fine when i pressed the fob for unlock and lock i tested the wires for a signal and it worked fine

DONT trust me on this but it works on my car i used the red and black wire give me 2 mins ill post a pic i took was goig to do a how2

Ah so you were just after 12v when it locks or unlocks and not trying to control it?

tbh when i brought the kit the bloke said i needed to wire it up to the unlock and lock wires, so i got a tester so see wich wire had power when i locked and unlocked the car to trigger the kit off that wires upto the headlights, it works tho
