    Default timing chain / service

    Hi all,
i have a 56 plate 2.2direct sri and i thought the engine seem louder like it was ticking/rattling. so i took it to vx for a aircon service and asked them to have alook at the chain. they rang me to tell me they agreed it was louder than usual and recommend oil and filter change. it was due a intrim service so i agreed for them to carry out the work. upon collection they told me the chain still seemed loud but to let the new oil work its way around.

i was staggered when they told me no service checks were ever done to the chain. the tech told me its not worth replacing the tentioner alone as that can cause problems. they quoted between £400-£600 for a new belt kit. but they told me this is something that should never require changing.

    have i been fobbed off?

No service interval for the chain, but rule of thumb here is when it get noisy change it, dont muck about, if it goes it will cost an awful lot more to repair. Contact member on here benny and see if you are near him, he will sort you out and for less than the dealers. What he dont know about the 2.2 and it's timing chain aint worth knowing.

Ask the garage if they're willing to talk to Vauxhall to see if they will offer a good will/gesture payment. Mine did when the tensioner failed.

    See http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104735 for more info.

That aside, mine has just been serviced again, and the engine is quieter than before the oil change.

sounds quite a common problem. i would say that after the oil change it has got alot quiter but not completely eliminated it.

is there any driving techniques that will prolong the chain for a few months?
the mrs uses it most just to drive littleun around so its never really gets above 3k RPM

Short town or school runs would quicken the wear I would have thought. Every so often it needs a good italian tune to get rid of the cobwebs.

thought i would update this thread.
took my vectra back to vx to have them listen to the cam chain again after the oil and filter change. they also inspected my air con system after it being regased.

turns out the air con compressor has 2 holes in it quoted £500,

the service manager recommended fitting a revised tentioner which would cost £122 but couldnt guarantee it would solve the problem.
they quoted me £800 for a full new belt kit fitted. so i asked about a vx goodwill payment. they were more than helpful. Half an hour later got a call to say vx would pay 60%. so i gave them the goahead to change the chain.
Then i got another call to say after the chain change it would need another oil and filter change, i explained it had been done last week. so after some more good will and haggling i got them to do oil and filter for £25

so all in £325 for cam change and oil and filter with 12months warranty for the engine.
Well done vauxhall pick it up tomorow

    I think you mean chain.

The original quote of £800 (before the goodwill gesture) sounds way too expensive, btw.

Especially considering in March 2010 I was quoted something like £550, and also got a 70% goodwill gesture which brought it down to £164.

well that ****ed on my cornflakes lol
well its abit late now to argue the price. To be fair thou to get a goodwill payment at all on a 56 plate with 75k on the clock is better than paying £500/£600

Maybe you could have had it done cheaper, but that's still not a bad price - and a lower initial quote but with no contribution from Vauxhall would have cost you more.
