2.2DTI engine cuts out except when airflow unplugged

Update on my 2.2DTI Vectra- keeps cutting out when driving and hunts / won't restart easily. New EGR, same problem continued. Diagnostics inconclusive (shows glow plug problem?)
Unplugged airflow meter- car has done 1000 miles without a peep but only 2000rpm. Got new airflow meter- plugged it in, problem returns! Plugged it out, car runs ok (smooth but not beyond 2000rpm ie no poke)

Flummoxed.

The wire to the airlfow sensor plug is Y shaped, one end being the airflow sensor plug. The other end of the Y has a lug on it attached to a metal bracket that looks like it should be bolted down somewhere or plugged in to somewhere but there's no obvious place for it to live. May be a red herring as this has seemingly never been attached to anything even when the car was running normally.

Ideas?

Could be you've replaced it with a faulty MAF or from your description, you have found a possible sensor cable issue. I don't know tbh m8, I don't know much about the DTi. Stick up a pic of the cable/plug in question and bump this thread as there are plenty of DTi owners on here.
