remove engine from 1.8

My clutch is on way out and all posts state gearbox removal/refitting is a pig. I thought about removing engine instead. Is there enough room to slide engine to drivers side to clear gearbox shaft or does the whole lump with gearbox have to be lifted out together?

I'm sure someone posted about just sliding the box over and there being enough room, can't remember who or when tho.
