Question Anyone help me out with removal of vxr steering wheel please!

    Hi all

I need to replace my complete dashboard and im stuck at how to remove the steering wheel
Ive managed to remove three screws that hold in the silver parts that clip onto the front of the wheel but im not sure what to do next!!
Ive found some holes in the back of the steering wheel which look like they are entry points for more screws but i cannot see around the back of the steering wheel to see if there are any screws in there! Ive tried several torque drives ect but im not finding any screws in there to remove!
Does the front panel with the airbag in it simply pull of or is it held in with screws somewere?? Dont want to try pulling it off and end up breaking something Would welcome any pointers here cos its probably easy but i dont want to set of the airbag or snap something of cos i missed a step!
    Cheers rich

    Hey mate,

You didnt actually need to remove the three plastic pieces (radio controls).

The two little holes you see on either side of the back of the wheel are entry points for a small firm screwdriver (flat one).

Basically you have to slide the screwdriver in straight and when the screwdriver goes no further, you need to pull the screwdriver sideways, so the handle of the driver effectively moves towards away from the steering wheel. This will release to catch pins and the airbag should pop off on each side as you move the pins.

The first time I did it I damaged the entry to the holes as its a pain the backside if you dont know how, but once you done it its a doddle.

My explanation is really poor, but the way I normal do it is to get a thin long but firm flat screwdriver, and then for the drivers side I sit in the door way (on the sill) and stick my head towards the wiper stalk/footwell area and the slide the screwdriver in. Then simply wait until its fully inserted (sounds like car porn-LOL) and then feel around with the tip of the screwdriver and try to locate the moving spring loaded pin and pus the pin inwards (screwdriver moves outwards).

And then turn the steering wheel around and do the same.

Best of luck. If you were local id come and do it for you.

Ok, sit in the door way of the car, and turn your wheel around until you can see a hold on the right side BACK of the wheel, its a tricky one to see as the cowling comes in the way so turn the wheel approx £45 degree to the right and you should see it.

At the end of the hole is a straight spring loaded pin, which needs to be pushed towards the centre of the steering wheel with the flat end of your screwdriver. This should then unclip the airbag.

Check these pix, they may help buddy.

Its a pain at the first time as it takes A LOT of fiddling.

Oh, and make sure you have left you battery disconnected for at least half an hour before you disconnect the airbag.

Im guessing that your airbags have gone, hence the removal of the dash, in which case there is no issue.

Na i still have the airbags but silly me had a huge barmy with the misses and decided to hit the dash above the airbag causing it to fold in!
Great idea aye! Now ive got to remove the whole dash and replace it as it looks like crap with the huge whole in it..
Ive been trying the above for a while now and im not finding the tabs to push so im guessing i need to use another type screw driver or something!
All the ones i have are either to little or to long lol
