    Default Turbo Blown

    I have a vectra CDTI sri 150 16valve 2006.

I was driving the other day when it seemed to lose all power and smoked loads of smoke out of the exhaust. We have put this down to be a broken turbo as i have stripped it down to the turbo and one of the turbines is damaged. Just wondering if this would affect any other engine components as the intercooler and all pipes were filled with oil as it was leaking oil from a pipe coming off the turbo. Also when replacing the turbo is there anything else i should change except for the air filter and oil filter?

When you say damaged, how do you mean? Is a blade missing or obviously broken into pieces? I'd be wondering where those parts from said turbine are. It's possible they're in the intercooler or pipes but they can also get into the engine. I'd get the intercooler out and fill it with petrol to wash it out then thoroughly dry it by leaving it in the sun for a few hours. I believe the banjo bolt that supplies the oil to the turbo should be replaced too but I'd wait for someone with more experience to pop along and not just take my word for it!

If part of the turbine had detached, it would have gone down the exhaust into the CAT. Damage to the turbine is very unusual though, could you post a picture of what you found?

Ill try and post a picture tonight when i get in from work, my main concern is that i am going to repalce the turbo to find the engines completely had it. And from what i can see it appears that the axis the turbines are on has exccessive play roughly about 6mm. And one of the fins on the turbine has the corner chopped off were it seems to have hit the casing of the turbo.

The bearings in the turbo have clearly failed catastrophically! The movement in the shaft, radially should be vertually nothing. If the compressor is damaged, then you have problems but if it is all intact at that end you should be okay. The turbine would be a mess if it hit the wall. You may be able to get just a new core for the turbo if the exhaust manifold and compressor housing show no major damage? If not, what are you doing with the old turbo?

And i was just going to put it on ebay but if your interested we could definitely sort something out. If you like i can take a few pictures when im home from work and ill have a better look at whats actually wrong as i only had a quick look over when i took it off.

Default Which end of the turbine

The important detail to be ascertained,

Is it the turbine in the exhaust, that's broken

Or the turbine in the air inlet side.

Over the weekend I changed my turbo cleaned out all the intercooler and pipes with petrol and found that most of my engine oil was in their aswell.
After giving a good 3 hour run with high revs car is now running smoke free with alot more power. My old turbo seems to be that the bearings have gone on on of the turbines as has a lot of play.

Will be posting my old turbo in for sale section if anyone's interested open to any offers.

    Cheers for the help
