Excellent. I've got two Renault 5 GT Turbos (one's a project, not currently running), and a spare engine/gearbox if anyone fancies putting that good old bulletproof C1J788 engine into anything. You can't beat a nice sturdy iron blocked 8 valve carb engine with a turbo ramming air in at 20psi

No HG issues - unless you never change the coolant, or run stupidly high boost pressures without taking into account that things will get hotter, so you need to make sure the cooling system is working properly.

Got a bad press in the early 1990s where kids where just whacking the boost up and not doing anything else. The standard cooling system is easily up to the job, but not if the coolant in it is what it left the factory with back in 1986!

I distinctly remember they had hot-starting issues; although I did think the Raider special edition was quite tasty.

Yes, I won't argue with the hot start problem. Though if it's a 1989 or later it has an 'anti-percolation' fan which blows cold air through the intercooler and carb after engine switch off to help prevent all the petrol in the carb evaporating. Assuming the sensor that sits close to the turbo hasn't melted, this does work quite well.

My black GT Turbo has never really suffered from hot start issues, except on track days or when drag racing (ie a lot of sitting around with no airflow), but my yellow GT Turbo does suffer a bit in hot weather. It doesn't have the fan though, so I'll get round to fitting one at some point.

Post '89 cars? Those are the "5 extra BHP due to closer manufacturing tolerances" and "badge moved a little to the side" cars..?

Phase 2 GT Turbos have a different camshaft profile and turbocharger to Phase 1s. The torque band is a little wider so slightly less likely to catch you out on a wet corner and put you in a ditch as the turbo spins up, the front wheels lose grip and you torque steer into a ditch.

Oh yes, it's a car you have to concentrate to drive! No power steering, no ABS, no traction control, and only 850kg front wheel drive.

Lots of fun, but can be frustrating as with any 1980's car.
