not legal if the car doesn't have auto levelling for the lights and headlamp wash system fitted. This applies to ANY car and not just a 52 plate car. Currently there are no issues with HID lights and MOT's other than ensuring the beam is set correctly.

I think if you have projector lights and assuming they're the correct level, it's perfectly fine and looks OEM. The problem is when you have HID's in light clusters that are not designed for that level of light... take the Astra H for example. It doesn't have the projector lens as standard and thus, spreads the HID light out so far that it blinds everyone. I ran into someone with this problem (although it was on a MkIII Golf) and he told me he gets pulled all the time - yet he still hasn't taken them out... I had the misfortune of driving him somewhere while he was following, and my eyes felt like they were bleeding.

My Carlton has HID headlights retro-fitted, passed MOT's for the last 7 years and do not dazzle AFAIK.
Obviously it depends on the lens (if reflective), choice of bulb (mine are 6000K) and beam pattern.

In which case you pay the little bit extra and fit the correct HID bulbs which have the blackout cover on top of the bulb (H7R instead of H7 - that is of course if your particular car uses H7 bulbs). In the real world however people without projector lights don't bother and end up blinding everyone else and give HIDs a bad name.

Whilst not legal, as long as your beam pattern remains the same you should be fine. Checking HID fitted cars have self-levelling light/suspension and washer jets is not part of an MOT test. To have HID's a car must have projector type lenses (which Vectra's are fitted with as standard.)

What you should do is whilst fitting, draw your original beam pattern on the wall (in pencil!), fit your HID's, and compare and adjust.

if they are fitted properly, aligned correctly and u make sure you set the headlamp level switch correctly and that the headlamps are kept clean they wont cause you a problem with the law or the mot tbh. technically they are not legal without levellers and washers but i cant see any decent copper being too bothered if you are being responsible about making sure you dont blind other people
