Default 2.2DTI Unexpected & Continual loss of performance

    Hi all,
Right this is not the normal thread of lack of performance due owner naivety / lack of maintenance etc. My 2.2 is very well cared for and has been running very well until 2 days ago.

At 55mph on a dual carriage way I started to accelerate and out of the blue got LHM. I pulled over and shutdown and restarted, and all good for a further 2 miles and then LHM again while accelerating graduly from 50 to 60. Again shutdown and restarted and ok for 3 miles. Shutdown and started but kept it in 3rd and nailed it a few times and runs without LHM but is clearly down on power.

After reviewing the forum and TIS2000, I replaced the boost sensor, MAF and replaced all vacuum pipes and cleaned all filters. Checked all plugs and visible sensors and cleaned to be sure. I’ve checked all boost hoses and joints, sprayed bubble leak detector and all good. Checked for oil in turbo, excessive play and all is fine. Checked for intake blocks and clean air filter, all good. Just to be sure, I also jacked it up and checked for binding brakes.

Ran the car again today after all the work and from cold she pulls good but nothing like she did and when warm , she may as well be a Rolls as she just glides along with no poor acceleration and between 50 and 60 Mph under acceleration LHM. RAGE!!!!

All 3 VX dealers near me are garbage in regards to diagnostics and all want between £75 and £160 and a full day and half tank of fuel to try and fault find. This is not acceptable in any form given current climate.

    HELP PLEASE

    Hi,

I don't know about the CAT. Would it just get clogged and cause these problems so quickly? It has done 107k miles though.

When you say check the throttle pedal how do you mean? It has good travel and is dry with no obvious signs of anything broken or worn.

    Thanks

One thing I can tell you is the turbo intake body manifold is clean as a whistle but the main inlet manifold underneath is very gummed up and carbonised. There is a definate restriction there but I am unwilling to remove the injector pipes and I would have to reprime the lines on my own and i'm not sure how to do it.

EGR is kind of clean but carboned up. Don't know if it works correctly as I don't know what position it should be in with engine off and running.

Fuel economy has also gone down. I always got 50 - 54 Mpg on the run but now only get 38 - 44

I will strip the top turbo intake body off tomorrow eve and take some pictures of the manifold and egr with engine off and running and post them here.

Great Thanks. I'll order one tomorrow morning. How about the CAT and Throttle?

    Cheers

SOunds like Crank shaft speed sensor if it only happens once upto temp. sometime ignition off then ignition on will get you going again but it will worse and become more frequent to the point you have to let the car cool for 20 minutes before it will restart.

They are about £40 from Vaux, ebay cheapies tend to fail very quickly eg a few months after purchase.

    Default Update Thursday 07:00

    Morning,

Got in the car at 06:40 started up no problems. Drove off and no problems, pulling very well. Driven about 2 miles in traffic so a little time to warm up and then pushed it hard. It ran well but is down on power.

It then ran well and I put it into cruise at 55. The needed to accelerate and LHM. Shutdown and restarted which cleared as usual and noted the temp as just below 80. Seemed to be ok and then when accelerating from 65 to 70, bang on 70 it went LHM. I'm going to book it in for Friday PM but don't know if the errors generated will stay in the ECU after I restart the engine and its going to cost £75 at VX just to have a look.

Can you tell me what this sensor or switch unit is please?

Will take some pics tonight of general engine bay but it's clean and tidy.

Would the EGR cause these problems when warm and only during 'Normal' acceleration? From the look of it, it has either never been changed or it was but a long time ago.

My EGR was putting me into limp mode on my 2.2dti, however it was during casual motorway driving (so up to temp) it would flick in and out of LHM. I also sometimes cleared it by switching off then on, and although intermittent it was getting more frequent over a 2 week period.

I took the EGR out, cleaned it up with carb cleaner and wet n dry paper and it's never caused issue again (this was last year, time to go over it again thinking about it!). Try this first off before taking it to Vx, your code reader will confirm if that's the issue, and the codes should be stored.

I've started to clean mine up once a year as a matter of course now.
