    Red face Urgent alternator help needed!!

    Right then...

    On the way home from work tonight I got the battery light... No power loss or any symptoms yet but I guess the alternator is on it's way out

    I've got an 07 1.9 cdti 150 vec c

    How much should I be paying for a new one?

    Any type in particular?

    Car going to garage in the morning so need to know what a reasonable price would be so I can see if it's worth me buying one myself then getting it fitted

    I need to get it done asap

    Any help would be really really appreciated

    they aint cheap new mate, best way is an exchange refurbed unit as that will cut costs down....

    I had the same problem as you with mine last year, i got the alternator checked and it just needed a new rectifier, its a common fault and he said he had done plenty of them. To supply and fit the new rectifier cost £85 with a 12month warranty. Its a lot cheaper than a new alternator! Get them to check it out before buying a new one..

    Will see what the garage say... It might not even be alternator hopefully!!

    The only prob is that I need the car so can't really wait around for parts

    It will be the alternator mate, cant see it being anything else, unless the aux belt has come off that is? lol

    get the voltage checked asap... if the alt is dying then very quickly you will have no power at all including no power steering etc...
    imo you are best getting a new unit, the amp rating is plated on the side of the unit... i have heard of plenty of folk buying recon & end up having more probs.

    Stick a multi meter across the battery positive and negative to a engine mount / hoist point, with the engine running you want 14V or higher below 10 Volt and your going to kill the battery very quickly.

    Exciting though when the alternator and battery go, the car goes into a shut down mode you loose power steering then ABS, after that you wish round about were squarer ;-) then the dash dies before eventualy the car just shuts off .... wiper still work though ;-)

    new alternator from Vaux parts only is £275 ish

    Alternator mate. I learnt the hard way in my missus' CDTi 150 early this week.

    Battery light.... 5 mins later.. TC light..... ABS light... Power Steering light... Loss of power steering..... Changed down a gear, foot to floor, engine died....... Couldn't even close teh window or put the hazzards on, it was that dead!!

    Paid £198 for a brand new 130amp alternator from Euro Car Parts. They gave me Trad Club discount too

    Battery survived, but I've heard stories of the batteries being wrecked by a failed alternator.
