    Default CDTI 120 questions

the last time I bought a Vec-C I went for a CDTI 120 and it was frigging riddled with problems.

Im hoping that was a one-off and put it down to bad experience.

Im looking at the 120's as they are meant to be a little bit more reliable and hopefully cheaper on the insurance, so here are a couple of questions:
    1. Is the DMF more likely to go on a 150 than a 120 or is it the same?
    2. Is the Inlet manifold and EGR valve still and issue on the 120?
    3. Does the 120 have a DPF?
    4. Can the 120 have its EGR mapped out too if needs be?
    5. Whats the main failures of the 120?
    6. Can the 120 be re-mapped / chipped which is insurance worthy and wont cause me any problems and will it give better economy as well as more grunt? Whats the likely costs?
Thats all I can think of for now, but please add anything else you feel is worth looking out for.

    Thanks.

    Bye bye Vec B

I can answer on two of your questions (3 and 6) from my experience.
I have my 2006/7 120 CDTI for over two years, made about 40k kilometers and nothing bad happens at all. Mileage is about 81k now. There is no dpf in my car and I have remapped it by the end of last year. I'm very satisfied, fuel consumption is lower (I noticed about 0,5l/100km less- convert it to mpg) and power increased from 114,3 to 153,5 hp (roller measurement) so I'm very very satisfied. I strongly recommend to remap this engine because 120 hp is a bit too small for such heavy car.

The 120 doesn't have swirl valves, so the inlet manifold should last the life of the engine.

    1. Is the DMF more likely to go on a 150 than a 120 or is it the same? Depends on the gearbox. M32 and F 40 is used on this engine. Most common is M 32 and DMF will not fit. Sachs make better aftermarked DMF
    2. Is the Inlet manifold and EGR valve still and issue on the 120? No problem with the inlet manifold because no swirl flaps. EGR can get dirty and must be cleaned sometimes.
    3. Does the 120 have a DPF? Some has, in UK I think its just estate from 2006 / 2007. Can be removed from ECU.
    4. Can the 120 have its EGR mapped out too if needs be? Not deleted, but turn down in ECU to about 5 % opening without EML
    5. Whats the main failures of the 120? EGR needs cleaning sometimes, nothing else I now about.
    6. Can the 120 be re-mapped / chipped which is insurance worthy and wont cause me any problems and will it give better economy as well as more grunt? Whats the likely costs? Dont know avout insurance, but cdti 120 is a good engine to remap. I drive 170 hp/400 nm with better fuel economy then standard. Price in UK is between 200 £ - 500 £.
