    Default Tickover

Morning, I noticed whilst driving to work that when warm the tickover on my 150 CDTI is 1000 rpm, whereas it used to be around 8-900. I have also just noticed that when turning the steering wheel at low speeds the power steering goes heavy, the stereo seems to go off and the brake and TC lights come on. Having searched on here there appear to be a number of possible problems (CIM, speed sensor, power steering fluid, alternator), but does this sound like the alternator is on its way out?

Alternator mate. My missus's CDTI 150 did this 3 days ago. As the alternator died, I lost the power steering first, as it uses the most power. Followed by all other electrical items shutting down one by one.

The ECU sees the lack of power in the battery (as not being charged by the alternator) and increases the tickover.

Don't ignore it. I learnt the hard way, in the outside lane of the A1 in rush hour!!

busy searching the web for a new part! There seem to be some decent priced new ones on the 'bay and the how 2 on here looks like saturday is now booked for the job!

Out of interest will the car keep going or will it just die - I only ask as I work 45 miles from home and its only Wednesday so still ideally need to get to work, at least tomorrow until I can sort at the weekend.

it could die any moment fella i certainly wouldnt wanna risk a 45 mile drive and it could wreck your battery as well.
also be careful where you buy a replacement from ebay

saw your previous posts on this topic, but opted for a brand new part (same as a previous member) so not a recon.

Problem is I am at work now so need to get home later - guess I will just have to risk it or give the RAC a call.

The car will just die. I found out the hard way. Driving down the A1, saw teh battery light, then ABS light, then Power Steering light, the TC light, EML, Spanner, all one by one, within 5 seconds of each other. Lost Power Steering then engine cut out. I was in the outer lane of teh A1 in rush hour. Had no power at all. Could not indicate or put the hazzards on. Luckily I saw a gap and veered across to a slip road.

On fitting new alternator, I jump-started the car. The battery seems to have taken a full charge now, so looks like I was lucky with the battery.

You say you live 45 miles from work. Mine was dead within 5 miles of first noticing something was not quite right. Had no chance really.

I got a new Alternator from ECP. They gave me trade club discount

well I made it home tonight from work and am only local tomorrow so shouldnt need to use the car. Had to jump start car from work as battery didnt have enough power to start car. Stereo intermittent and TC/ABS lights on for a bit, then ok.

Checked voltage on battery and not battery at fault. Alternator provided some charge to battery as after leaving it parked I just tried starting and it fired up.

Alternator should be here tomorrow ready for weekend. As always great forum - got to be one of the best I have personally been on for getting almost instant help and advice
