Angry Y20 DTH Snapped Crank Shaft

Hi, my car was making a ticking / knocking noise when the engine was under load. I thought it was a cam lifter on its way out, so I left it. A week later there was a massive clunk from the engine and it died. I got the car back to my house and took the rocker cover off. Checked the chain timing and all was ok. I then took the sump off and found the problem. The crank had snapped clean in the centre. The bearing shell in the con rod had also melted a bit.

Does anybody know if I could replace the crank with a used one, using my pistons etc and new bearing shells?

Also Will the valves be ok in my head ?

Thanks for any help with this.

    Cheers..

You could use a second hand crank. You will need to use either new shells (main, big end and thrust bearings) to suit the new crank, or whichever ones were used with the donor crank.

Once the replacement crank was fitted, the protusion of the pistons above the block would need to be measured, which may need a different thickness of head gasket to suit.

Only a visual check and leak check of the valves will prove if they are OK or not.

Yeah I think I will go for a used engine, I have put a request on a breakers website and have had loads of offers back for engines, from £300 - £1450.

Its a bit of a gamble I guess but I will try and get the engine with the lowest guaranteed miles for my budget.

If anybody can give me any heads up on the job ahead I would be grateful. I guess I need to start stripping all the bits of my broken engine to bolt back on to the donor one....

Many thanks for any help you can give..

You'll need to use your own diesel pump on the new engine unless you have the pass card from the doner vehicle in which case vx can code the pump to your car hth

Thanks for the good luck messages guys, I think I will need it. Its a very daunting task. I have done gearboxes and clutches before but not a whole engine. At least I can now repair my A/C compressor which I bought a new bearing for whilst the engine is out of the bay !

Got my engine hoist on order from the local hire shop !

I will try and take photos and write a description of it all. I will try and post a pic of the snapped crank soon, looks nasty !

    Angry Disaster !!!!!!

Hello all, just a quick message to end this thread...

Took engine out of car to find the dual mass clutch rattling like a F**ker...

This had basically shook the crank in to snapping. I think I have read another thread somewhere on the site about this. I enquired about prices for replacement DMF & clutch kit. OMG the clutch and flywheel cost more that the car is probably worth !!!!

So after hunting around for a replacement clutch kit I found a solid flywheel conversion kit at euro parts, cost £496 !!! bought this and set about swapping bits over from my bust engine to the donor engine.

I took off the rocker cover of the donor engine to replace the diesel injection pump and saw the state of the cam lobes. OMG looked like someone had taken an angle grinder to them.. I was told it had done 75k, but it looked more like 300k with no oil changes !!!!!

At this point I was extremely p*ssed off to say the least !!!!

I have now made my mind up that I will have to break the car or sell it as a complete package with the need for an engine and clutch ! All other bits are working 100% including the injection pump!

I am really gutted, when this car was running it felt like a new car still. It had 130K but it was still good as new !

So if you have clanking noises coming from you engine area on acceleration or under load, stop using your car and get it checked. Also if you lift your oil filler cap off whilst engine is running the knocking will get really bad.Watch out for oil splashes though !!!

The total cost of the repair would of been £1000. I think the car is only worth around £1500..

So i returned the clutch kit and got full refund. And the engine is being picked up today. I have been told that i will get a full refund...
