Default UK aid to India still - why?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13768374
    Recent debate.
I've nothing at all against India, in fact they've become one of the most wealthy countries in the World overall <<(edit: number 10 richest country in the world, 2011 by GDP)
One example of India's wealth that springs to mind, "TATA" bought out one of the UK's biggest industrial companies Corus (formerly British Steel) in 2007 for vast sums of money.
Should a country with this kind of wealth still get £280million a year in aid from the UK? Yes there is poverty in India, but they should do more to sort it out themselves, imo.

TATA own Jaguar/Land Rover/Range Rover as well mate. IKWUM though time to allow people to support themselves.

I heard on a talk radio station not long ago that it's all to do with trade relations. Nothing to do with Aid.
It seems it's basically a sweetener to allow us to continue trade with other countries. The host and phone in caller seemed quite genuine and gave concise reasons to this fact.
The more money we give the more that countries businesses will trade with us.
Not a bad thing when you think that most if not all UK industries have fallen or collapsed and ended up in foreign hands. BMC Mini anyone?
    Just a thought mind you.
All seems a bit odd to me though but what do I know....

They may be one of the richest countries but the vast majority of inhabitants live in poverty
This policy is not likely to change in the near future

I hear the point, will try to find out more on that. BBC haven't explained it well.

This coalition government has fully committed itself to increasing aid -- even now during the "period of UK spending cuts" -- to £11bn a year (in foreign aid). This is one of the "largest aid programmes in the world" (BBC, 2011).

Includes additional payments to several areas recently striken by abnormal natural events, such as Chile and Japan
Equally, Japan wouldn't even normally be considered

India is on the verge of awarding a contract for 126 fighter jets , the two competitors are the french rafale and the british typhoon , that is one big bargaining chip for foreign aid

    complete and total disgrace...

just like India itself if I'm honest with you. I go there quite often in my job, the divide between wealth and poverty is disgusting.

A few years ago I went to Calcutta. We drove through an utterly poverty stricken area, total slum... People eating/sleeping/****ing on the streets... But in the background there were huge advertising boards showing Sony Bravia TVs and designer bathroom suites. I'll never forget it.

There's no way our "aid" goes to the people living in that slum...

Money is rarely given just for goodness sake, its only traded.

Whatever the political title of the trade, its still trade
