Default 2.2dti died on motorway and now wont start

So I was driving home from a day out, kids in the back wife in the front, just the usual. Third lane of the motorway doing about 75 ish and the car just died, no warning light or limp mode just nothing. Lights still on on the dash but the engine had just switched off.

After a medium wait at the side of the motorway, in the p*&%ing wet with two shivering kids, the AA man turned up and took us to a safe location.

His machine said it was an issue with the EGR valve. I though that should have just sent it to limp mode? We guddled with it, cleaned it a little as it did feel a little stuck. After a wiff of easy start the car fired up. Two minutes later, same thing and now it just wont go at all.

It was dragged home by Mr AA, but now it's sitting in the drive. Any suggestions would be great, otherwise I'm turning it into a garden feature!!

    Cheers,
    Larann.

The butterfly seems to be ok, moves freely and with the vacuum pipe off and an appropriately shaped bit of wood wedged to stop it closing the car still doesn't start.

Should have also mentioned it's on 2004 plate.

I'll get the codes read again and see what they say, I've taken the egr valve off and cleaned etc, seems fairly smooth in operation, but I guess your right it could be fubared and you'd never know. Am I right in thinking op-com or tech2 can switch off the egr to see if the car would start? or am I definately looking at getting a new one? (£360ish for the dealers...)

Any way to test them? Four wires going to it, one must be power and another earth, two sensor wires? If you take the plastic end off there's only two connectors feeding the solinoid, if I run power and earth to this would it prove anything? or will the issue more likely be with the sensor side of things?

Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for the advice so far. I like the car and would hate to have to turn it into a flower pot.

i doubt its the egr valve the car should still run , sounds more like a crank sensor or the p**p has gone best get the codes read first
best of luck i hope its something small

If it was a sensor or egr the mil light would be on, sadly this sounds like the fuel injection pump, same thing happened on the wifes 2.2dti Frontera and it was the pump. Not sure if the Veccy's use the same Bosch VP44 type pump but if it is that, i'm sorry to say, a costly thing to replace.

    Gulp...
I did crack the injector pipes and there is diesel getting there, if it was the pump would this still happen?

New pumps are £2200 plus vat and that's exchange! Think I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Cheers folks so far, anybody able to fix it via webcam ^^?!?

Forgot to say that the MIL light is now coming on.

yes you will get diesel at the pipes even if the pump has died ,unfortunatley i also have been there and found it very hard to believe it was my pump i tried everything even praying in the end i sold the car as a non runner and cut my cost
but chin up until you get the codes read

Passes larann the smelling salts. Did the same thing cracking the pipes and there was diesel there, but not enough pressure to operate the injectors and make the thing run. Eventually i had the car recovered to a diesel specialist who connected his eletronics to it and the pump reported it was fubarred. As i say, i am not sure if the Vectra 2.2dti uses the same VP44 pump...anyone??????

Yes the VX ones are around £2200 exchange, but your local motor factors can get a recon bosch pump for wayyy less than that. As i recall, the Fronty one was about £750 from the factors.

Yes it's the VP44 but it's of the PSG16 variety (the newer one) and not alot of places will touch them.

@Larann, take it you got it fixed after the steinbauer problem?
