    Default Air Con ... again

If you read some of my previous threads, you may know I had my car in for a suspected fault with the air conditioning. VX dealer (EH in Hull) stated there was no fault and it simply needed re-gassing. This was only back in early May this year. I use it regularly and didn't feel it was as cold as it should be. Now, only a few weeks later, surprise surprise it doesn't work again - no cold air but still getting the hiss noise when pressing the button.

Would I be within my rights to take it to an air con specialist to diagnose and hit EH with the bill as when they carried out the re-gas, my car was still under manufacturers warranty... or as I think,... do I have to give them the opportunity to amend and rectify?

Problem is booking your car in at the dealers is the time you lose, I cant book it in for 12:00 as they don't work like that, you get your car there for 12 and it gets : the next available slot... and as I've experienced the last two time, this is generally 4:00p.m! - being on industrial estates, there are not many options for you to kill an afternoon without disrupting someone else's time to pick you up and take you back...

I recently had a similar ongoing problem. The main dealer re-gassed my system months ago and charged nearly £70 for the privilege. After a few days the air con stopped working again. I eventually took it back when the car was in for service and told them to check it again – they re filled it again and this time put in some UV dye, when I picked up the car they told me that it was the condenser (front air con radiator) that was punctured so it would cost me £500 to replace, fortunately they didn’t charge me for the second re-gas because they should have picked up the fault first time. I now have a new condenser fitted that was done by an Air con specialist and only cost half of what the dealer quoted.

If you have paid the dealer for refill and they have failed to diagnose a leak you might be able to get them to check again for free. The Air con specialist who did mine said he had done quite a lot of late model Vectras (08 on) and he thought the condensers were susceptible to damage.

Thing is, I'm self employed so time is money. I can get my local specialists to check in an hour, VX take a full afternoon. Secondly the specialist will no doubtedly do a better job.
Just annoyed that VX failed to pick this up under warranty.
I shall be fitting a mesh guard also I think.

Phone the dealer that did the regas and explain the situation.

They might give you a hire car or book you a slot.
